Residential – Living Room/Dining Room – Kenilworth, NJ

Project Scope

Apartment Transformation

This beautiful living room/dining room in a rental apartment was designed for a young working chef/restaurant owner and his fiancé, an interior designer. The goal was to create an inviting, cheerful space, with several uses including a living-TV room, dining room, home office and entertainment area for friends and family.

First, a new laminated wood floor was installed. Next, painting the walls a soft off-white creates a peaceful canvas to display colorful and interesting pieces of art. The bright colors of fabrics on the sofa, the dining chairs and the un-expected zebra fabric pattern, create impact, giving a refreshing modern look to the room.

The tall window treatment design consists of a combination of simple, soft fabric side panels and natural woven shades, giving a finish and distinctive look to the room.

The soft white area rug defines the living room space, adding texture and softness to the floor. The oversize decorative mirror reflects light and enlarges the feeling of space. The custom shelf for the mirror is, in reality, two wall brackets.

The French style sofa was a “street cleanup find”. By using her vision, the designer added new fabric and paint creating a magnificent piece which will be enjoyed for years to come and for a fraction of the cost of a new sofa. The dining chairs were a garage sale purchase. Although they were outdoor garden chairs, now they are a conversation piece, with bright new paint color. They are paired with a recycled refractory French table, painted in white high gloss finish.

The ottoman cocktail table serves as cocktail table or it can be pulled to the dining table when need. The modern style of the ceiling fan provides a cool breeze when needed, and adds a nice touch to the ceiling.

By using French doors in the entry to the room, a private setting is created by limiting the view into the hall, kitchen and bathroom.

The design of this apartment space is a perfect example of implementing fundamental decorating ideas to improve a small space. By using a creative combination of beautiful window treatments and re-painting, re-purposing and adapting existing furniture, a room with four walls is transformed into a multi-purpose and beautiful living space.
